Iron is an essential mineral. It is an important component of hemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. About 70% of the body’s iron is found in hemoglobin and myoglobin, the latter facilitates oxygen use in muscle cells. About 5% of the body’s iron can be found as components of various proteins and necessary elements in various enzymatic systems.
The role and importance of iron cannot be overestimated, primarily because the deficiency is so unpleasant and dangerous. Iron is involved in several other important biological functions; strengthening the immune system, aiding in energy metabolism, boosting mental and cognitive performance, helping regulate body temperature, and possibly providing relief for restless leg syndrome. Iron cannot function alone. It needs other minerals and nutrients to enhance its effectiveness. These would be copper, cobalt, manganese, molybdenum, vitamins A and C, B-6, B-12, and folic acid. Vitamin C will increase iron absorption by as much as 30%. Please note that iron and calcium should not be taken within 2 hours of each other to permit adequate absorption.
